Blockchain and Cryptocurrencies: The Basics
Few can deny that all indications point towards blockchain and cryptocurrency (or just crypto) technologies being a big part of our future. And while many look forward to the ascension of blockchain through Web3 that’s looming on the horizon, many others still don’t understand or see an opportunity for themselves to make the most out of these disruptive financial forces. To that end we are going to give you a breakdown of the blockchain and cryptocurrency basics, and have a look at their safety as financial instruments as part of our drive to help you make the most informed financial decisions possible.
The beginning: Blockchain
In its simplest terms a blockchain is an online decentralised ledger. What that means is that any given blockchain stores verified information that can be used for a wealth of business activities, but in this case, it does so online and in a decentralised manner.
What that means is that the ledger is not stored in one discreet server, but is hosted throughout a network, and each computer on that network holds an exact copy of the ledger that can be accessed by anyone else on that network.
But that’s not the only aspects of blockchain that make it so innovative. A blockchain’s information is fixed – the information the ledger holds cannot be changed once it is verified, and as such it also allows for the creation of smart contracts within the ledger, which are a set of rules that are enacted at predetermined events.
And the underpinning of all these innovations lie at the rigorous encryption methods of a blockchain. As we mentioned above, the nodes of the blockchain all hold a copy of the ledger, and across this decentralised network, the record of the blockchain’s information must be identical across every node in the blockchain’s network – otherwise it is not deemed as the same blockchain.
So when more information is added to a blockchain, it is stored in a discreet ‘block’ that can hold a set amount of data. Once this block is full, it is encrypted via a complex hashing system that gives it a unique identifier, and is then verified across the entire blockchain – i.e. all the nodes agree that the new addition to the ledger contains the same data, is encrypted with the correct hash, and only the addition becomes a new link in the chain.
And that’s the main points of a blockchain – it offers individuals and humans a way to securely store and access information that is verified and trustless, secure and offers ways to create efficiencies like smart contracts with the stored data.
